Proclamation of Irish Freedom
The Proclamation was publicly read by Pdraig Pearse from the portico of the captured General Post Office at the start of the Easter Rising on Monday, April 24th. 1916. After fighting with remarkable bravery and effectiveness against an overwhelmingly superior British military force, the rebels surrendered on Saturday of that week. The Rising did not receive widespread support from the Irish people at its inception.
However, the secret and often brutal execution of the leadership of the Easter Rising galvanized Irish public opinion to support the struggle to win Irish sovereignty. The leaders of the Easter Rising foreordained the Irish freedom they asserted in the Proclamation by the sacrifice of their lives.
