The Sam Maguire on tour

Across the generations, bonfires and lit sods of turf have greeted victorious teams returning to their home place. Some teams returning on trains, some in cars, while others marched on foot through the streets of their villages and towns. This photograph shows Kerry footballer Mick O’Dwyer with the Sam Maquire Cup strapped to the roof of his car, making his way to Valentia after winning the All-Ireland final in 1959.
