Red Rum “The Spirit of Aintree”
A tribute to a National hero........
Red Rum 'The Spirit of Aintree'
a superb limited edition print by Peter Deighan
Red Rum, quite simply, was Britain's most famous horse. In conquering the world's most fearsome fences, Red Rum possessed an abundance of stamina, courage and a great athleticism that helped him to create a unique National record that should never be beaten. He won the world's greatest steeplechase at Aintree a record three times, with victories in 1973 and 1974 under Brian Fletcher and, again in 1977 under Tommy Stack and finished a gallant second on his only other Grand National starts in both 1975 and 1976. In mastering 150 fences and over 180 opponents spread over a miraculous five years, 'Rummy' captured the hearts of a nation. A genuine superstar, he enjoyed a long and happy retirement before, sadly, passing away at the age if thirty in October 1995. He has been buried, at the only place he could be, beside the winning post at Aintree. But the memory of this most courageous horse, 'the peoples champion' shall remain with us forever through this outstanding work of art by Peter Deighan.
Commissioned as a tribute to the most remarkable chaser that has ever lived, Peter Deighan has proudly portrayed Red Rum 'the Spirit of Aintree' with big race jockey, Brian Fletcher aboard as they spectacularly clear the last on the way to another fairytale success and, fittingly, above the memory of that success, the magnificent portrait of a horse the nation loved.
