DUBLIN HURLING COMES OF AGE
There is no doubt that Dublin hurling has been on the rise for a number of years but 2011 probably saw the biggest impact yet on the big stage as the county teams, at all levels, competed for top honours. The seniors, under Anthony Daly, embarked on a mission in the National League against the best in the country and in their seven league matches recorded 4 wins (Tipperary, Offaly, Wexford and Cork), 2 draws (Waterford and Kilkenny) and just 1 loss (Galway). This set of results was enough to see Dublin qualify for their first League Final in 65 years where they faced the kingpins of hurling, Kilkenny under Brian Cody.
Daly’s men played some outstanding hurling on the day and their 12 point winning margin made it not just an historic win but also a decisive one and it was clear a new contender for the honours in the Championship had arrived. Dublin hurling also made serious strides at Minor and Under21 in 2011, reaching the All Ireland Final in both levels. Though unsuccessful in these finals it was more evidence that hurling in the capital has come a long way and with a youthful base there’s reason to believe that 2011 may just be the start of an era and more success lies ahead.
