SAM 09 – The 2009 GAA Football Championship (2 DVDs)
£12.95
In recent years the battle for the All-Ireland football championship has been fought out between perennial contenders Kerry and their great Ulster rivals Tyrone. Expectation in 2009 is for more of the same.
.
Kerry with Jack O’Connor back as manager and Tadhg Kennelly home from a glittering career in Australia, are most people’s favourites. But the competition is growing and the county on most people’s lips is Cork as Conor Counihan’s team looks stronger, faster, more powerful than most.
Elsewhere the traditional excitement surrounding Dublin has intensified with the appointment of Pat Gilroy as manger. But the Dubs can’t even take their stranglehold of Leinster granted as an improving Kildare are expected to challenge hard.
.
Tyrone have won two All-Irelands without first taking the Ulster title. This year could be different, as Mickey Harte’s team looks to be finally clear from the litany of injuries that have derailed the county’s previous attempts to put Sam Maguire victories back to back. But Ulster is never easy to win and Derry, under the new management of Damian Cassidy, are being tipped by many to take provincial honours.
.
Connacht again looks to another cross-border rivalry, this time Galway and Mayo. John O’Mahony has never gone this long as manager of a county without winning the provincial title. But Galway won’t be feeling any sympathy!
All of the big guns and a few surprises are still in the field as the summer progresses. And with the quality of football noticeably high, the destination of Sam Maguire in 2009 becomes increasingly impossible to call.
