.
The top teams in the country had one team in their sights. Kilkenny’s victory in the 2006 All-Ireland final put a stop to Cork’s three-in-a-row and established them as favourites to retain The Liam McCarthy Cup. But the 2007 championship began with a welcome surprise. Waterford’s talented team won the League – their first national title in 44 years – and with great skill shut out champions Kilkenny in the final. That victory kick-started the most exhilarating hurling championship in years.
.
The race for the Munster title started explosively with the season’s big controversy, an eruption of tension and confrontation before the opening Cork-Clare match had even started. Who could have foreseen the epic three-match series between great rivals Limerick and Tipperary? On the other side of the draw Waterford had to win Munster to seriously mark their All-Ireland challenge but first they would have to get past Cork who in the past have contributed to the most talked about rivalry in hurling. .
Throughout its history The Liam McCarthy Cup has gone overwhelmingly to three counties: Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny. But each year the championship opens with a sense of anticipation, the feeling that out of something the unexpected will happen. 2007 is no different.
